Energy Efficiency and Conservation meeting

The energy efficiency and conservation meeting was held on 14th January, 2022 in office 30, ministry of Industry. At this Meeting, Dr. Charlie Than, Union Minister of Ministry of Industry, Director General, Managing Director of Ministry of Industry and permanent secretary, Director General, Managing Director and representatives from other relevant ministries were attended.

According to the agenda, Union Minister of Ministry of Industry delivered the opening speech. In the opening speech, Union Minister said that related to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy's appeal to the public for the efficient use of electricity, the Ministry of Industry, which is responsible for the energy efficiency and conservation as focal ministry, will consult with the Ministry of Electricity and Energy on the electricity efficient usage schemes and methods to be coordinated in accordance with the instructions of the Chairman of the State Planning and Administration Council.

 The Ministry of Industry-MOI has cooperated with the Ministry of Electricity and Energy - MOEE (former Ministry of Energy) on energy efficiency and conservation activities since 2000. Under the leadership of the National Energy Management Committee, which was established in 1st September 2013. The Ministry of Industry started to take in-charge of the energy efficiency and conservation sector among the seven sectors. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Department was established in April 2014 aiming to promote and carry out energy efficiency activities nationwide effectively. The National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy, Strategy and Roadmap was approved by the government in 2016 and the target of the policy is to reduce energy consumption 20% by 2030 based on 2012 consumption. It is carried out mainly in four sectors, factories in industry sector, commercial building and public building in building sector, energy performance standard for machines and electrical equipment and transport sector to achieve the target.

Union Minister said that we all have known that energy efficiency and conservation activities can decrease energy costs by reducing wastage of energy consumption and consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions that impacts the environment, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7.3) that is to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030, was set and adopted internationally, is an agenda that all countries around the world must follow. Because it has become an important situation to be able to use electricity efficiently in Myanmar, this meeting will discuss the implemented activities and the action plans taken by the MOI in order to implement the energy efficiency and conservation activities speedily. He also invited to MOEE to discuss and cooperate with the energy efficiency activities implementation of the MOI and to provide the necessary support and advices on the LED lamps, solar panels produced by the Ministry.

Continuing, the permanent secretary of the MOEE explained and discussed the current situation in the energy sector, such as energy consumption for the industrial sector, transport sector, Commercial and Residential sector, Energy sector cooperation in ASEAN and ASEAN development partners, the activities of Ministry of Industry as the focal point of ASEAN EE&C-SSN.

Then, the Director General for the Directorate of Industrial Collaboration and the Director for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Department presented the implementation status of energy efficiency and Conservation Activities and way forward in the future. It was reported that the representatives from the MOI and the MOEE who attended discussed the issues related to the energy efficiency and the Union Minister of Industry delivered the closing speech and concluded the meeting.
